I led a team that mapped child mortality by district across 123 low- and middle-income countries from 2000 through 2017. The decline in child mortality during this time is a story of quiet success, but many countries still suffer from substantial in-country inequalities. This work received substantial press coverage and was presented on the floor of the UN General Assembly.

We map the effort to eliminate child mortality at the district level across 99 low- and middle-income countries, tracking 123 million child deaths between 2000 and 2017. While substantial progress has been made across nearly all countries, we found that 58% of deaths during this time could have been averted in the absence of within-country inequality.
